I’ve always been someone who likes a good mystery and a funny book. Combining the two is great, but only if done correctly. Jack Getze is obviously someone who knows how to do it correctly! Big Shoes isn’t just a mystery, it’s a funny mystery. If you can’t laugh at Austin Carr, you can’t laugh period. I’m serious. If you can’t laugh at Austin Carr’s antics, you can’t laugh.
Some things are amusing but not truly funny. Like Austin’s obvious PTSD issues when it comes to anything that even remotely sounds like gunfire. It’s put into the story in a few amusing ways, but the reader is able to understand his reactions when he/she is reminded of what Austin recently went through. The funny thing is how his erstwhile partner, who is still recovering from what they recently went through, acts. Not so much because it’s a part of his recovery but because the actions are just funny and because honestly, it at least seems like Vic knows what he’s doing.
My favorite character though is the tough-as-nails Mama Bones. Don’t let her frail appearance fool you, she’s not all that frail. And she’s got a heart of gold, no matter what anyone else may think.
Big Shoes is fast paced at times, slow paced at others, but it works well and it’s a great book. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good, funny mystery.
