Until police officers show up at the door and arrest Heather for robbery and arson.

Only one man can help prove her innocence. It’s Zack Jones, a volunteer firefighter…and the man she ran out on after their first and only night together.

Can he give her The Greatest Gift this Christmas, and once again unite Heather with her daughter? Or will Heather’s past keep her from Charlotte forever?

This story is a stand-alone sweet romance/cozy mystery. Series readers will enjoy catching up with town news and the latest happenings of the Frost Family…including a wedding.

Excerpt

Zack Jones jumped off the running board of Fire Truck 1, before the vehicle came to a full stop. His heart sank as black smoke drifted from the building, and flames spiked—bright and orange as a second sunset against the late November sky.

At best, Carol Falls’ favorite drinking hole would need repairs. At worse, it would end up in ashes, along with a couple of his fellow volunteer firefighters.

Zack masked-up, secured his helmet and readied the thirty-pound hose, carrying it on his shoulder as he scanned the upper level. Mrs. Trivett lived in a small apartment above the bar. Not the most suitable spot for an elderly lady, but the rent was cheap due to the loud music. Which didn’t bother Mrs. Trivett, once she removed her hearing aids.

He spied movement at the door to the fire escape, and handed off the hose to another member of his team.

Zack sprinted to the stairs—his hundred-pound protective gear weighing him down, adrenaline lifting him up. As he hit the bottom step, he saw Mrs. Trivett above him, the wind whipping her nightgown against her bare legs.

She eyed the drop to the ground below and froze.

Zack pounded up the stairs, reaching her as a window on the lower level shattered from the heat inside.

“I’ve got you,” Zack yelled through his mask.

He lifted Mrs. Trivett in his arms and carried her to the ground, where members of the Ladies’ Auxiliary comforted her with blankets and a hot beverage. That left Zack free to sidle up to the fire chief, Ian King, and hear their next move.

“Can’t see in the building,” Ian reported. “Smoke aside, there’s plastic Christmas wreaths in every window, blocking visibility.” His green eyes locked on Zack. “You work here—know the layout. You lead.”

Zack nodded and crouched low as he made his way through the entrance, his buddies clinging to the hose as they followed. The water they used to douse the structure bubbled to a boil at their feet.

Blinded by smoke and dripping with perspiration, Zack relied on memory and instinct to maneuver his way through the maze of tables and chairs. The heat and noise from the inferno grew as he approached the fire’s source, his breathing apparatus making him sound like Darth Vader.

One more step and flames appeared, rolling up to the ceiling. He couldn’t see the main counter for smoke. Couldn’t see the wall in front of him. Or the photograph he knew hung there, of the smiling owner, his staff and…one waitress in particular. A certain blonde, with the saddest smile Zack had ever come across.

He aimed the hose and made a pact with himself. He’d fight to save the bar and reclaim that photo, no matter the odds. The building provided a home to Mrs. Trivett and much-needed jobs in the town.

And the picture was the only shot he had of the one, unforgettable woman from his past.

About DF Capps

DF Capps

DF Capps is an author of Meteor Storm, Tsunami Storm, and Solar Weapon, technothrillers featuring new technologies and ancient history. Capps tries to illustrate the ways technologies we currently have could be used and he mixes these new technologies with his fascination with ancient history and alternative Archaeology. For Capps mixing the new and uncharted with the old is an exciting and illuminating undertaking.

Capps attended Wayne State University for two years before joining the U.S. Navy. Later he was Honorably discharged from the Submarine Service and went to work as an electrician in the Machine Tool trade in the Detroit area. Capps was initially trained in electronics in the Navy and expanded his training to include Industrial Computer Control and computer programming. Due to the fluctuating automotive job market in the Detroit area, he developed his design skills in both mechanical design and electrical design. Capps has six U.S. Patents and won a national design competition in 1985.

As a former electrical and mechanical engineer, Capps draws upon his experience to create much of the technology in his novels. He has a keen interest in emerging energy sciences and in his quest for knowledge on this new technology, Capps developed the control system for an over-unity electrical generator and witnessed first-hand the capabilities of such developing technologies, “The day I made the measurements on a machine that was producing eight times the electrical energy that it was consuming was a life-altering experience. I saw for myself what could actually be done, even though it was against all of my electrical training. Since then I have questioned everything that is considered conventional knowledge and found it terribly lacking. We actually live in a world that functions at a very different level from what we perceive.”

Capps uses this new understanding of the greater possibilities for science and technology in his sci-fi thrillers. Some of the writers who inspired Capps are Michael Baigent, Dr. Eben Alexander (Proof of Heaven & A Map of Heaven), and David Baldacci. Capps has attended dozens of webinars through Writers Digest to work on perfecting his writing craft. Capps’ goal as a writer is to fashion an entertaining story and then to weave generally unknown facts into that story leaving the reader wondering just what is real and what isn’t. If he can entertain a reader and make that reader question the reality around them, then he considers his efforts a success.

Take only what can be used. Take only what won’t be missed. The Creators are watching all of us.

White Frost lives in a world cloaked in darkness and ignorance. While most people in her society are content to live in fearful peace, White’s cousin brings her words from the mysterious Unknown. Strange collections of written words that tease her that there may be more to the world than candlelight and dank hallways.

But when tragedy strikes, White can no longer rely on the words to give her solace. She must discover what lies beyond the only world she’s ever known… no matter the cost.

Eventually, White finds her way to the skies and there she discovers that the tantalizing clues of her words are only pale reflections of the massive and wondrous world above. Colors she never thought possible. Blinding light. And an impossible being who may or may not be the Creator of it all.

But this information comes at a price White Frost is not sure she can pay.

White’s hunger for knowledge proves to be her greatest strength and weakness as she strives to learn more. But as she learns, she has to wonder – is there such a thing as too much information? And what will happen as it brings her closer to a being who could destroy everything she’s ever known?

The round tables of the Lehua Inn’s banquet room were filling up with Mahina State faculty. The men wore subdued aloha shirts and khaki trousers; the women dressed by discipline.  Colorful Guatemalan bags, gauze skirts, and flowing gray hair marked the social sciences.   Humanities favored bold eyeglasses and hair colors not found in nature. My few female colleagues in the College of Commerce sported a nonthreatening business-y look that might be described as “Beverly Hills real estate agent.” T-shirts and shapeless jeans indicated the natural sciences.

Emma Nakamura was an accomplished biologist, and looked it.  Her wavy black hair was pulled back into an indifferent ponytail. Her face, browned and lightly freckled from hours of canoe paddling, was bare.  Her idea of dressing up for our offsite retreat was to wear a seed company t-shirt that she’d picked up for free at a conference.

I didn’t fit in anywhere. Not surprising, I suppose, for a literature Ph.D. teaching in a business school. At some point I’d have to modify my vintage wardrobe if I was going to survive in humid Mahina. I imagined my heatstroke-reddened corpse, stylish in a vermillion wool Lilli-Ann coatdress and opaque tights.

“Friggin’ Student Retention Office,” Emma pressed on her paper name tag as she beelined to the refreshment table.  “They’re about as useful as a MRSA infection.”
