Book Review: The Diva by Hailey North

0

I’m going to come right out and say it. I couldn’t get into this book. Maybe it’s because I’m just busy as can be right now–I just started the new school term for college–or maybe it’s because I don’t read a lot of romance novels, but this one just didn’t hit me right.

To me the description of the book really didn’t fit. The description calls Quentin & Mia a power couple, but they aren’t actually a couple when they’re alive from what I could tell. The description calls Chelsea a diva hell-bent on destruction, but from what I could tell when I first “met” her, she didn’t really like the diva life she lead and it was all a product of how her mama raised her.

Perhaps if I’d been able to really get into the book and read further into it, I might have seen how description fit the story, but from what I was able to read, the description just didn’t fit. It’s a shame, really, because I wanted to read this book and I wanted to like it. Perhaps some time in the future I’ll revisit this book and be able to read it from start to finish and enjoy it, but unfortunately,  this is apparently not that time.

I received a copy of this book for free from The Killion Group in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed here are 100% my own.

PULL
Author: Anne Riley
Release Date: February 2, 2016
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press

SYNOPSIS:

Rosie Clayton witnesses a mugging on her first night in London—and then the scene rewinds itself.

She finds herself standing in the same place again, with the mugging happening just like before, except this time a stranger steps in and stops it. There’s no way the same incident can have two outcomes. Rosie thinks she’s losing her mind, until just a few days later, the stranger saves her.

The stranger, Albert, and his band of misfit crime-fighters, have the special ability to Pull, which allows them to rewind just enough time to undo a recent event. Someone is hunting Albert and his crew– and now that Rosie’s been seen with them, she’s a target too. Rosie is left with no choice but to trust Albert to keep her safe.

As Rosie learns more about this unbelievable ability and the people – if you can call them that – who want them dead, she discovers that the group’s desire for her blood might be more than mere coincidence. Each step into this magical side of London introduces Rosie to a family history that she never knew existed, and dangerous forces that could unravel her world in an instant.

Her family may be the reason they’re all being hunted—and she may be the only one who can figure out how to save them. Sure, between the lot of them, they have a few shots to get it right. The thing about Pulling, though, is you have to be alive to do it.

Review

PULL is a pretty good story. The concept sort of reminds me of Dr. Who without the police box and with more limited time traveling abilities. As I recall, Dr. Who could show up in any time period, whereas Rosie, Albert, and his crew are only able to rewind a short period of time–just barely enough to undo a recent event that shouldn’t have happened.

I liked the book quite a bit, but I did find it hard to focus on the story at times. There were a few things that didn’t quite make sense to me, but it’s entirely possible that I was just too distracted by my impending return to school and academic life to fully grasp the nuances of the story.

As for characters–I think the characters are well-written and well-thought out. I completely sympathize and empathize with Paul and how much it hurts him to have to see people he loves in various degrees of illness or injury. I’ve been there and done that and so Paul’s character is one I can relate to. I didn’t relate so much to Rosie even though she’s the main character. I just preferred Paul to Rosie.

The book gets a solid 4 stars from me because it is quite good even though I couldn’t stay focused on it.

Book Blitz & Review: The Song That Seduced Paris by Cindy Irish

My Review

The Song That Seduced Paris is in short, amazing. While it started off a bit rocky for me–I’m seriously glad I wasn’t reading it at work or at school because the opening of the book isn’t exactly safe-for-work/school–I am very happy to report that the beginning of the book did not detract me from continuing with the book. This is a good thing because I’d have missed out on a great book had I given up at that point.

This book is interesting. Gabriel is lonely, which floors those around him because he’s a star in France. But stars are often far more lonely than anyone realizes and Gabriel is one of them. Annie needs to let go of her deceased husband and her painful past. When these two get together it’s fireworks. It just takes a bit for them to actually get going. 😉

The book is so well written I was lost in it every time I picked it up. It made it an easy read and one that was hard to put down once I got into it. This is a definite must-read and I can’t wait for the rest of the series, especially Nico & Michael’s stories. I want to see what kind of women capture their hearts!

Excerpt

Cloaked in darkness, Gabriel thought he was dreaming when she floated past him like a sweet phantom: filaments of timorous light. He didn’t make a sound because he didn’t want to lose this, whatever it was. Stopping at the keyboard, she played seven notes that made him smile: Mary Had A Little Lamb. Why, it was Little Bo Peep, he thought, charmed right out of his trance.

His parents had been very progressive people. They’d wanted him to learn many different cultures and languages, so he’d been tutored in English since he’d been quite young. Childhood memories bombarded him as he remembered one of his favorite nannies, an American woman who used to sing this song to him.

Something awakened inside him then. It felt like happiness.

When she moved toward the window, moonlight caught her just so, and Gabriel lusted. He stopped his groan before it hit the air, but his groin had a mind of its own. He hardened, the urge to thrust nearly overpowering as she crawled up onto the pillowed seat. She opened a locket hanging around her neck and sighed. Then she closed it and let it drop back to her chest, wrapped her arms around her knees, and sighed again.

He started at the sound of her voice.

“What lovely music I heard coming from up here tonight—but it made me cry in my sleep. The music was crying, too.”

Dieu, he wondered, was she talking to him?

“A beautiful man whose melodies weep. How can someone like him be lonely? But I felt his pain all the way to my bed, and I wanted to take him inside me and kiss him until it went away.” She covered her face with her hands. “I can’t believe it’s you I’m telling this to.”

Gabriel asked himself again. Who in the world was she talking to?

She knelt and placed her hand on the window. “I was so lucky to be married to you, Stephen, but I need you to help me say my real last goodbye. Do it for me from your side of Heaven. Push me away, because I’m too weak to do it alone. Please let me go.”

He really hated bullies. Especially, assholes that bullied women.

Leaning on the bar, Austin Rose looked back over his shoulder, his grip tightening on the beer glass in his hand. The bully leaned down into the blonde beauty’s face, his hand slamming against the table with a resounding whack. She seemed unfazed by his aggression — her shoulders relaxed, her head at a patronizing tilt.

Her shaking leg gave her away.

She’d followed Austin into the San Diego airport lounge after he’d checked on Hope’s flight, learning he had an hour before his future sister-in-law arrived. The open bar was deserted except for the three of them and the bartender, who looked just as unfazed as the blonde wanted to appear. The early afternoon hour proved slow for the establishment, though with his plans, Austin found the early hour suited his spastic nerves well.

“I asked you a question.” The man spat his words, his arms braced on the square tabletop.

Straightening, Austin turned around on his barstool and tipped up the brim of his straw cowboy hat. Airline passengers walked to and from their gates beyond, the overhead announcements muffled from the buzz of hurried conversation. His brother, Jaydan, would’ve already been at her side. The D.I.R.E. super agent was a man’s man, someone that stood up for the underdog and faced any resistance with courage.

Austin wished he could say the same.

The woman stood to her full, leather-covered height, her heels and black pants making her legs appear a kilometer long. The man blocked her path, causing her to bend back over the table, her green-tipped curls falling to her waist.

“Get out of my face.” She pushed against the man’s chest, her black fingernails digging into his shirt.
